Nick

Nick Jackson is the singer/songwriter and guitarist in The Nick Jackson Band. The band is so named because Nick occasionally performs small acoustic gigs on his own, playing his own songs. It means that when the band or Nick plays no-one is under any illusion over what material is being played.

A former journalist working in the Greater Manchester area, Nick is concentrating solely on his musical activities.

Some of his songs touch on his experiences as a reporter working in the north of England as well as his life experiences.

In the 1980s and early, Nick was the front man of the band Mirrors Over Kiev.

Ben

Ben Jackson is the drummer and backing vocalist in The Nick Jackson Band. Growing up, he and brothers Nick and Brook learned to play music together.

However, like many musicians, Ben has also made his mark outside of the industry, working for the NHS and representing numerous health workers as a Unison branch secretary in the Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust.

His former bands include Mirrors Over Kiev and The Good Sons. In both these bands he has toured extensively across the UK, Ireland and Europe.

Among his bandmates he is renowned for his radar-like ability to drive back to a destination thousands of miles away without a map, having been there only once.

Brook

Brook Jackson is the latest addition to The Nick Jackson Band, joining on bass in the middle of 2025 following the passing of John Wilkinson.

Brook has always been a supporter of his two brothers as they grew up and embarked on their musical journey, and recruiting him on bass following John’s tragic passing was ‘a no-brainer’, according to Nick.

Outside of music, Brook is something of a technologist, specialising in software development for ANPR cameras which are in use on roads across the globe and visual inspection machinery on manufacturing production lines.

All three brothers felt the pull towards music after their mother, as a youth club leader, took them to see David Bowie and his band at Preston’s Guild Hall on his famous tour to promote the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust in the early 1970s.

The story of The Nick Jackson Band dates back to the early-to-mid 1990s when the band then fronted by Nick, Mirrors Over Kiev, effectively split.

Nick’s brother who had been the Mirrors’ drummer along with lead guitarist Phil Abram departed to form a band called The Good Sons.

With no band and the music industry at that time obsessed with the commercial rivalry between Oasis and Blur, Nick opted to concentrate on writing new songs and reworking some of the songs he wrote for the Mirrors as a solo performer.

Freed from the responsibilities of fronting a band, Nick took to experimenting with his songs on the open mic circuit in Greater Manchester, mainly in his home town of Bolton.

While other performers played popular cover versions, Nick steadfastly stuck to playing his own material.

“The open mic circuit was a real melting pot of individuals with a diverse range of music,” explained Nick. “While other performers enjoyed going down well with their well-known covers, the audience would often talk through my unfamiliar songs.

“Slowly, however, because I refused to stop playing them, the regular audience came over to my side and my music started to gain similar approval, to such an extent that one my compositions, Northern Song, gets performed by other local musicians.”

And it wasn’t long before a couple of other musicians asked Nick if they could play with him.

So in 1997, The Nick Jackson Band was formed, with Norman Cook on drums, John Wilkinson playing bass and Brendan Doherty on acoustic guitar.

That was when they began work on their first album, Miracles, with Nick Bold guesting on lead guitar and backing vocals. The album, produced by Barry Eden was released on CD in 2000.

Ben Jackson returned to join Nick in the band not long after the release of Miracles.

Numerous gigs in pubs and clubs followed, with performances at the Edinburgh Festival, an open-air gig at the European Car Free Day in London’s Camden area and multiple performances in the Italian capital, Rome.

Opting to home-record and self-produce The Nick Jackson Band’s output has been slow but steady with follow albums Secrets (2006), Beautiful Place 2010, Ballads, Social Music and Songs (2014) and Coverings (2017).

There have been a number of line-up changes, most recently forced by the passing of bass man John Wilkinson. Brook Jackson, Ben and Nick’s other brother, has now joined on bass.
